About Alliance Quartet

The group Alliance was established on March 7, 2006.Through the years we have been blessed to be a part of church homecomings, decorations, revivals and singings all over North and Central Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee…gaining friends and followers that we proudly consider family. Many changes have taken place within the group since 2006 but we have continued the unique Southern Gospel sound that we have always been known for. This can be heard in our latest project, Did He Ever Think of Home. Several of the songs on this recording were written by group members and have quickly became requested favorites. Our current group consists of James Hillis as tenor… Josh Kirby as lead… David Kirby as baritone and Greg Carter as bass. The group is now singing with a live band. Phillip Willingham plays the keyboard…Danny Ewing and Mike Owens both play bass guitar. Wayne McCaffrey plays Lead Guitar and Mike Mahan finishes out the group by playing the drums.

Meet the Alliance Team

“But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” – Isaiah 40:31

Singers

James Hillis - Tenor

James was born in Huntsville Alabama. He and his  wife Connie  reside in New Hope Alabama. James started singing at an early age in the Church of God choir. He was influenced by his great uncle Lewis Haggard who sang with the Country Men Quartet many years ago. James loved watching them perform when he was a youngster. If you ask him he’ll tell you the biggest influence on his singing came from a family friend and country singer Earl Thomas Conley. He started in a family gospel group early on. He was very bashful and Conley assured him that he would be fine. James has been a part of several groups through the years. Starting in 1998 with Proclamation Quartet..then in 2000 with New Vision Quartet. In 2013 Revived Quartet was formed and he sang with them until 2018. James joined Alliance in the spring of 2023 as tenor.

David Kirby - Baritone

David joined Alliance as baritone singer in July of 2020.He brings with him many years of singing and song writing experience. His singing began in 1985 with The Sacred Aires from Grant, Alabama. He and his wife Pam then moved to Georgia where he joined The Proclaimers and later on The Seekers Quartet, singing with them for several years before returning to Alabama. David then formed his own group called The Master’s Touch and sang with them for about five years before starting a solo ministry. That ministry led his family to Oregon in 2006 where he was pastor at Fairhaven Church of God for thirteen years. During that time he sang in a family trio with their son Josh and daughter Hannah. In November of 2019 David and Pam moved back to Albertville, Alabama to be with family. He is excited to be a part of Alliance and is looking forward to what God has in store.

Josh Kirby - Lead

Josh joined Alliance as lead singer toward the end of 2017. He was born in Georgia but grew up in Albertville, Alabama. His parents, Pam and David, instilled a love of Southern Gospel Music in him from a very early age. Some of his fondest memories are of traveling with his dad’s group, Masters Touch to hear them sing the gospel. As a child, he learned harmony and as he got older he attended the Steve Hurst School of Music for two years, encouraging and directing his gift of song writing. In 2006 his family moved to Oregon where Josh served as worship pastor for seven years at Fairhaven Church of God. During this time he sang with his dad and sister as a trio and also had his own group called Masters Touch Second Generation. In April of 2017 he made the decision to move back home. He currently resides in Albertville, Alabama.

Greg Carter-Bass

Greg Carter has recently joined Alliance Quartet as our Bass singer. He started singing at the age of 14 with Liberty Quartet from Sevierville, Tennessee. Later his dad accepted a pastor’s position at a small church in Ider, Alabama and moved the family to Sand Mountain.  During high school Greg and his brother Mike started the Canaanland Boys Quartet. When his brother left for a full-time singing position, Greg joined the Alabama Boys Quartet from Scottsboro.  A few years later he joined the Harvesters Quartet owned by Ricky Perkins until joining back up with Mike to form Daystar from Gadsden. He sang with Buck Masters Quartet from Bessemer and with and with Southern Harmony from Sterrit….to chart several songs on the Singing News charts.

In 1999 Greg founded the Steel City Quartet from Birmingham.  In 2017 it was renamed Steel City Revival until the group disbanded in 2021. While with Steel City he sang with the Thrasher Brothers from Birmingham. This group had won 5 Grammys and is a member of the Alabama Musical Hall of Fame. He was honored to be their bass singer over the span of 20-year span.  In 2022 he joined the Singing Ambassadors and continues to help them when he can.

That brings us to the decision to join Alliance Quartet. Greg has been friends with David and Josh since the early 2000’s…often calling on David to fill in when he needed a lead singer. He is honored to take the stage with his friends and new quartet family. He and his wife MS. Dee have been married for 38 years and now live in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.

In Memory of Jeff Smith

The Alliance family was devastated at the passing of our bass singer and founding member, Jeff Smith on July 19, 2020. If you have ever heard Jeff sing… then you heard one of the best bass singers to ever grace God’s Earth… but also the most humble. You never heard him talk about his talent… but he took pride in the talent of the group. We referred to him as our leader or boss man but he would always deny that and say that the group belonged to each of us, no spot light for him. Everyone who truly knew Jeff, knew what a giving heart he possessed. He couldn’t stand the thought of someone doing without something that they needed… or something he thought they needed… from friends to strangers to animals, he truly had a servant’s heart. You could always turn to Jeff for advice, for prayer or if you simply needed someone to hear what you had to say… he was always there. For those of us who knew and loved Jeff he left us with the sound of his laughter, his smile and memories that will never fade. His was a golden voice… that was silenced way too soon. Alliance will continue Jeff’s legacy by continuing with the quartet.
